About this workshop

There are a wide range of ways to learn at UBC. Some of these ways include conferences, workshops, virtual learning, apprenticeship and coaching.

Join Coaching@UBC for an informative and interactive event to explore how coaching can support UBC staff and faculty to increase learning effectiveness to achieve goals and desired change.

This session is designed to provide participants with an understanding of Coaching and how Coaching@UBC services can be leveraged to enhance their learning.

This session will include:

  • practical information about coaching and the Coaching@UBC program
  • a coaching demonstration
  • reflective activities to help you identify potential areas of development
  • Q&A (bring your questions about coaching!)

Coaching@UBC has been offering free 1-on-1 Coaching Services to faculty and staff since 2002. Since then over 1,500 UBC employees have accessed our award winning program. As we explore ways to develop personally and professionally, we have access to a wide range of topics and ways to learn here at UBC from large scale events, workshop, virtual learning, hands-on experience and coaching.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this interactive session, learners will be able to:

  • Understand what coaching is and how coaching can support learning
  • Identify potential areas for development
  • Observe a coaching conversation
  • Learn how you can access free coaching through Coaching@UBC


While Coaching has been offered at UBC for 16 years, many of us are still not sure what coaching is and why we would choose coaching. If you're interested in finding out more about coaching and how it is another way to learn and develop, then this session is for you.

This session is open to all faculty and staff who are curious about coaching and wish to explore different ways to learn.

About the facilitator

Catharine Chang joined UBC in 1997 and worked in a Human Resources managerial capacity with what was formerly known as Land & Building Services and UBC Library prior to her current role as Program Manager for the Coaching @UBC Program. Catharine discovered coaching when she was transitioning into a managerial role after returning from her one year maternity leave. Coaching changed the way she conducted herself in work and life and eight years after her first exposure to coaching, she became a Certified Coach through the Coaches Training Institute and was a successful applicant for Coaching@UBC's Coach Internship Program. She is an Internal Coach with an ICF credential of Professional Certified Coach and also holds a CPHR designation (Chartered Professional in Human Resources).

Kelly Labrecque has been the Clinic Manager in the Division of Respiratory Medicine since 2007 and began exploring coaching as a way to improve her management skills. After being accepted into Coaching@UBC's Coaching Internship Program in 2014, she studied coaching at the Coaches Training Institute and became and Associate Credentialed Coach with the International Coaches Federation in 2015. Kelly is passionate about using the coaching methodology to help others live their lives with maximum impact and works with staff and faculty in the UBC community on leadership development and success.

Jenna White joined UBC in 2011 and has been working within the Development and Alumni Engagement portfolio ever since. Jenna found coaching when she realized she wanted to help people in a deeper capacity and to empower them to fulfil their dreams and create the life they wanted. Jenna became a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach through the Coaches Training Institute in the Summer of 2014 and has been an internal coach for Coaching@UBC since the Fall of 2014. She holds an ICF credential of Associate Certified Coach and has cherished every moment since she said "YES" to embark on her coaching journey.
